چکیده

Petascale parallel computers with more than a million processing cores are expected to be available in a couple of years. Although MPI is the dominant programming interface today for large-scale systems that at the highest end already have close to 300,000 processors, a challenging question to both researchers and users is whether MPI will scale to processor and core counts in the millions. In this paper, we examine the issue of scalability of MPI to very large systems. We first examine the MPI specification itself and discuss areas with scalability concerns and how they can be overcome. We then investigate issues that an MPI implementation must address in order to be scalable. To illustrate the issues, we ran a number of simple experiments to measure MPI memory consumption at scale up to 131,072 processes, or 80%, of the IBM Blue Gene/P system at Argonne National Laboratory. Based on the results, we identified nonscalable aspects of the MPI implementation and found ways to tune it to reduce its memory footprint. We also briefly discuss issues in application scalability to large process counts and features of MPI that enable the use of other techniques to alleviate scalability limitations

μπ: a scalable and transparent system for simulating MPI programs

μπ is a scalable, transparent system for experimenting with the execution of parallel programs on simulated computing platforms. The level of simulated detail can be varied for application behavior as well as for machine characteristics. Unique features of μπ are repeatability of execution, scalability to millions of simulated (virtual) MPI ranks, scalability to hundreds of thousands of host (r...

Scaling to a million cores and beyond: Using light-weight simulation to understand the challenges ahead on the road to exascale

As supercomputers scale to 1,000 PFlop/s over the next decade, investigating the performance of parallel applications at scale on future architectures and the performance impact of different architecture choices for highperformance computing (HPC) hardware/software co-design is crucial. This paper summarizes recent efforts in designing and implementing a novel HPC hardware/software co-design to...

A Checkpoint-on-Failure Protocol for Algorithm-Based Recovery in Standard MPI

Most predictions of Exascale machines picture billion way parallelism, encompassing not only millions of cores, but also tens of thousands of nodes. Even considering extremely optimistic advances in hardware reliability, probabilistic amplification entails that failures will be unavoidable. Consequently, software fault tolerance is paramount to maintain future scientific productivity. Two major...

Study of parallel programming models on computer clusters with Intel MIC coprocessors

Coprocessors based on the Intel Many Integrated Core (MIC) Architecture have been adopted in many highperformance computer clusters. Typical parallel programming models, such as MPI and OpenMP, are supported on MIC processors to achieve the parallelism. In this work, we conduct a detailed study on the performance and scalability of the MIC processors under different programming models using the...
